Hundreds of young researchers in mathematics and computer science, including some of the world recognized mathematicians and computer scientists’ laureates are currently in Germany to attend the 9th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF).

The HLF is annually organised by the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF).

The opening ceremony, which held on Sunday at the New New University building in Heidelberg, had more than 400 attendees from over 50 countries.

200 researchers in mathematics and computer science were selected for this year’s HLF, which is the first to hold physically after two years of virtual encounter due to COVID-19.

At the opening ceremony, the audience was treated to a short video of some attendees who spoke about how excited they were to be able to attend the HLF in person.

Representatives of the award-granting institutions, Yannis Ioannidis, President of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Carlos Kenig, President of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), and Gunn Elisabeth Birkelund, General Secretary of The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (DNVA), were on stage for a panel discussion.

Despite the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nigerian students invited to Germany came second in the competition scored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (DNVA) and the International Mathematical Union (IMU).

Each successful application was reviewed by at least three international scholars.

The Nigerians were selected as the best young researchers in Mathematics and Computer Science after Indians who came first in the field of young researchers.

During the forum, the young researchers will connect with fellow scientists to encourage their future career.

The Chairperson of the HLFF and Managing Director of the Klaus Tschira Foundation, Beate Spiegel, stressed the importance of the scientific community, particularly in difficult times.

On his part, HLFF Scientific Chair, Anna Wienhard, spoke about her expectations for the forum.
