Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi yesterday began pre-season training with his new English Premier League club Nottingham Forest.
Awoniyi recently put pen to paper on a five-year deal with an option for another year after his stint in Germany with Bundesliga side Union Berlin, where the 24-year-old helped The Iron Ones to qualify for the Europa League after scoring 20 goals in 43 games for Union last season.
The Reds, as Forest are known as, are currently on a training camp in Spain. And they will get their first run-out of the summer on Friday, when they face Coventry City at the Pinatar Arena in San Pedro del Pinatar.
Fixtures have already been announced against Burton Albion (July 12), Barnsley (July 16), Hertha Berlin (July 20) and Awoniyi’s former employers Union Berlin (July 23). They will then face neighbours Notts County at Meadow Lane on July 26. Following that, their final match before the season begins will be against Valencia on July 30, which will also be played at Meadow Lane.
The former Liverpool starlet has been tipped to lead the club’s charge for at least the Europa Conference League in their first season back in the EPL for 23 years.
Despite Cooper’s plan to sign more players for the Reds, Awoniyi is expected to be the club’s top marksman when they start their EPL campaign against Newcastle on August 6.
