Ronke Akanbi smashed Nigeria’s 33-year-old women’s 3000m national record at the on-going International School Sports Federation (ISF) Gymnasiade at the Stade Hélitas, Caen, France yesterday.
The 17-year-old from Yewa College, Ilaro, Ogun State ran a time of 9 mins.36sec to break Itsemhike Anwalimhobor’s long-standing record of 9.41. 28sec set in Benin City in 1989.
Romania’s Marginean Florina and Gladysheva Arina from Kazakhstan got the silver and bronze medals respectively.
Meanwhile Temitope Olusesan finished in eighth in the Women’s 100m finals while Lukman Adebayo competed in Heat 2 of the boys 100m and he finished fourth in 11.26sec.
Nigeria went to France with a contingent of 10 athletes comprising six girls and four boys to compete in the athletics event. This competition commenced on the 14th and will be ending tomorrow, 18th May.
